The Round Pen

Training HorsesIntroduction
The round pen has been used for many years in the USA as a tool for training horses. Here in the UK it is growing rapidly in popularity as more horse owners are taking notice of natural horsemanship.

Trainers such as Monty Roberts and Len Judd have established the round pen as a valuable training tool. If done correctly by the average horse owner you can achieve some remarkable things to help your horse get past a variety of issues, whether the horse is young or old, trained or untrained.

Horse can move freelyWhy a Round Pen?
Simple, it has no corners so the horse cannot get stuck, or hide in a corner with its back to you.

You are still close enough to influence the horse if you need to do so and the horse can be freely moved around. This is so important in the round pen, especially when teaching a horse to “join up” at liberty.

As the horse is a flight animal it is vital for him to be able to move his feet and think things through. This helps build trust and confidence in us humans. Once the human is established as the leader, the learning curve can be very fast, whether on the ground in hand, under saddle or at liberty.

Surface
As with any other arena surface, good preparation of the site is important. A drainage system will enable the round pen to remain in use all year round. There are many types of surface available and it is down to the individual as to what surface they use. Grass is ideal for summer use as the pen can also be used as a starvation paddock.Grass is ideal for summer use

During our research, we came across this sentence which says it all, “no amount of equipment will exert more control over the horse than his own mind”, so true.

Unlock your horse’s mind and talent in a BB Round Pen – it’s not just for lunging.
